The best route is not always the shortest one.
At the same time, there are moments when people feel like taking a longer walk, shifting their mood, or taking a detour without any particular reason.
On what basis am I choosing this route right now?

In everyday urban mobility, route choices are often made on autopilot, based on the common belief that the best route is the shortest, fastest, and easiest one. Routes with fewer transfers, familiar paths, and minimal effort are commonly regarded as rational choices.
This project focuses on these everyday preferences and questions the common belief that the optimal route is always the shortest one.
After entering a destination station, users are invited to choose among multiple routes. Alongside the shortest route, the system presents alternatives framed according to non-numerical values such as calmness, a sense of space, and changes in scenery. The selected route is printed as a receipt, transforming route choice into a tangible record.
By highlighting experiential and atmospheric qualities that cannot be reduced to travel time or number of transfers, the system encourages users to reflect on how they make route choices in everyday life. Through this design, we propose an alternative way of understanding mobility: not merely as a problem of optimization, but as an opportunity for reflection and seeing everyday movement differently.
